La Terra de l’Estrany (The Land of the Stranger) is a very personal documentary about going back — my going back to my hometown of Cervera — after a long absence. It consists of a compilation of different moments, people and landscapes that I encountered in the course of a five-month stay.
I shot almost all of the footage myself. An HD camera, a tripod and a couple of microphones was all the equipment I had. The modus operandi of filming was basically instinctive: I led myself be guided by the emotional impact made on me by the encounters I had during the period of making the film.
The whole thing was marked by the emotional duality of someone who feels deeply connected to their native soil yet at the same time sees that there is a part that of them no longer belongs, and essentially poses the question whether it is really possible to return.
I spent my childhood in Cervera, and it is therefore the home of my first memories. The factor of ‘time’ in every sense of the word became a central element of the project as it gradually developed. The place itself ended up revealing itself as a pool of time in which I saw reflected both my own image and the unfolding of life in a broader sense.

DOCUMENTARY VIDEO PRESENTATION | La Muga Caula from Marcel Duchamp to Esther Ferrer by Nelson Hausman

La Muga Caula is an international encounter of performance and action poetry which takes place in September at Boadella i les Escaules, in Catalonia’s Alt Empordà region. Behind the founding of this annual get-together is a historic event: the 40th anniversary of Marcel Duchamp’s 1965 visit to the Caula waterfall at Les Escaules. Duchamp, one of the outstanding figures of twentieth-century art and the godfather of Conceptual Art, visited the spot in 1965, as surviving documentary evidence shows, and had probably been there before, seeking inspiration for his great final artwork, Etant Donnés. The international encounter which takes Duchamp’s visit as its origin is thus dedicated to the ephemeral roots of Conceptual Art, and specifically action poetry and performance.
Each year we produce a special video documenting the get-together, which is then shown at other festivals and art spaces, universities and art schools. La Muga Caula de Marcel Duchamp a Esther Ferrer by the young filmmaker Nelson Hausman bears witness to the performances presented and to the exceptional atmosphere and the human contacts at such an intensely experiential art event.
The artists documented are:
Clemente Padín, Yolanda Perez Herreras, Malgosia Butterwick, Carlos Llavata, Xavier Canals, Pep Aymerich, Pietro Pellini, Willem Wilhelmus, Jordi Cerdà, Isabel León, Esther Ferrer, Boris Nieslony, Elvira Santamaría, Nelo Vilar, Koke Vega, Gustavo Vega, Eva Pérez, Andrea Saemann, Tomaso Binga and Àngel Rodríguez.
Length: 60 mins.
There will also be a screening of La Chute de Pedro Sousa (1 min.), an animation by Pedro Sousa of a visual poem which he created for the occasion.
. . .
Nelson Hausman has a degree in Audio-visual Communication specializing in documentary film. In 2009 he won the Audience and the Jury prizes at the Barcelona VisualSound Festival for young audio-visual artists.
Pedro Sousa has taken part in several editions of La Muga Caula and designed the poster is the first encounter in 2005.

‘By way of a reading of poems by Paul Celan and Velimir Khlebnikov from our present perspective, this combative book looks at how the enemies of poetry nest within poetry itself. The hatching of their eggs may be accompanied by erudite speeches, political revolutions or jazz music. The troubadours of today also turn tropes. They uncover all of this. Things have not changed much since Arnaut Danièl’s time. He never tired of practicing the hard art of harvesting the wind of a stormy day, hunting the hare with the ox and swimming against the tide.
‘If Karl Kraus, before Benjamin and Adorno, shrewdly observed that a culture ends when the barbarians break out of it, we are now in a position to say that poetry vanishes when its obstinate sentinels are no more. This process begins from the moment when culture is transformed into objects of worship, or closed empty boxes. A lineage of the abolished.’

The Desire to be Somewhere Else is first and foremost a reflection on that moment in one’s youth when doubt is the great creative force: a moment with such a density of expression that it seems to contain within it all that will come after. A reflection on desire and tenacity, put forward by Eulàlia Bosch.

ENCOUNTERS NEW FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE, ART AND THOUGHT
|
|
Own activity
|
|
30 september, 1 and 2 october, 2010
|
|
Lecture room and balcony
|
|
In this its eighth year Encounters will bring together a group of leading local and international figures from the fields of science and the humanities to address a specific theme from a multidisciplinary perspective.
This year’s Encounters sets out to rethink the concept of matter from a range of cultures and areas of knowledge, embracing aspects of physics, biology, chemistry and new technologies, not forgetting cooking and nutrition. The key characteristic of soft matter is its ability to drastically change its state — between liquid gas and solid — and its physico-chemical properties, with relatively weak external tensions.
The Encounters and the reflection on ductile, transformable materials seek to build bridges of dialogue between disciplines on the basis of workshops, lectures and performances. There will be a presentation of the book Simulated Certainty, a compendium of the 2009 edition of the Encounters.
Participants include Oron Catts (SymbioticA), Victoria Vesna (UCLA Art|Sci Center), Amy Rowat (Experimental Soft Condensed Matter Group, Harvard University), Marcel·lí Antúnez, Gulalab and Ruben Garcia, among others.
